Habitat Education Program

Aligned to meet Year 5 & 6 Geography and Science curriculum.

Combines integrated science perspectives and STEM disciplines.

The Jane Goodall Institute Australia (JGIA) is proud to introduce a brand new youth program inspired by our founder, Dr. Jane Goodall. Our ReWild Your School (RYS) program have been created by a team of eecological and educational experts.

This program aims to address the urgent need to halt biodiversity decline, climate impacts and enhance mental well-being via a transformative environmental education program.

RYS provides your students with the tools, knowledge and confidence to apply pertinent environmental solutions in decision making now and in the future.

Workshop Content:

  • What is habitat?
  • What do animals need?
  • Animal life cycles
  • Niche roles of animals
  • Threats to local animals
  • Identifying local species to champion in your area
  • Planning habitats to support local wildlife
  • Supporting a sustainable local environment

Schools will be supported to:

  • Research the needs of local animals
  • Identify and create habitat improvements
  • Select appropriate local native plants
  • Hold a working bee to plant habitat
  • Maintain and monitor habitat

  • Ability to use practical and online tools to identify existence of local species
  • Ability to use key concepts to research the needs of specific local species

Workshop content is tailored for years 5 and 6 with key learning areas in Science, Hass (Geography) and cross curriculum priority (sustainability). The workshop and post workshop activities can easily be incorporated into other learning areas.

We are offering limited free school incursions – available during Term 3 and 4 of 2020.

To be eligible for a workshop, please apply via the below form. Schools will be selected based on the suitability of the school grounds to provide improved outcomes for biodiversity, coupled with the willingness of the school to commit to the project. We understand that schools will have space restrictions, but with careful planning, even small areas can provide quality habitat and greater connectivity between surrounding habitat for your local animals.

Schools within fire affected regions will be highly regarded.

    This next section asks question to not only help us determine if your school would be suitable as a habitat stepping stone, but also to prompt you to identify a suitable location and the potential requirements for undertaking this habitat restoration project

     


     


     


     


     



     



     



     


     


     

    Terms and Conditions

    Workshops will be held at the winning schools during Term 3 and 4 of 2020 facilitated by one to three Volunteer Roots & Shoots representatives (depending on school size and facilitator availability).

    Roots & Shoots will provide supporting documents to assist schools with implementing this program including a booking confirmation, risk assessment, teachers notes, an action plan and other resources

    In addition to the workshop, Roots & Shoots will also cover costs for the habitat site preparation, plants, watering solutions and other habitat improvements (such as a nesting box and insect hotel) to a maximum of $500 per school.

    Planting and site preparedness will occur at the schools’ discretion ideally before the end of Term 4 2020. While Roots & Shoots will assist with advice and securing materials, on-site participation post workshop is at the discretion of the individual facilitators.

    Costs beyond this allowance will need to be met by the school and or via donation from other stakeholders determined by the school.

    School will document the habitat workshop restoration process with a short written report and photos/video which will be featured on Roots & Shoots social media sites. A form will be completed for all individuals featured in the photos/video to acknowledge their consent.
