The Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots Resource Box for Schools program is an initiative of the Jane Goodall Institute of Australia (JGIA), with funding support from the Phillips Foundation. 

It aims to educate students, and the community, via interactive and action-based programs about wildlife, the natural environment and challenges facing the planet.

This Roots & Shoots Australia project provides a FREE box of resources for primary schools.

The 2021 Roots & Shoots Resource Box for Schools is a series of school education resources that includes a Teacher Guide and four books. The four books cover Australian plant life, astronomy, Indigenous Community conservation activities and islands of Australia. The box also contains information on how to get involved in local conservation  and explains the WOODiWILD program.

In 2020, Roots & Shoots Australia produced and disseminated almost 4,000 boxes to schools across Australia free of charge – to educate and inspire the next generation as custodians of our planet. You can view and buy the books contained in the 2020 Roots & Shoots Resource Box in the JGIA online shop.

What are the key objectives?

The Roots & Shoots Resource Box seeks to:

• Roll the program out  to 4,000 schools in 2021
• Establish a network of like-minded schools that demonstrate curricula connections and direct actions that will make the world a better place for animals, people and the environment
• Provide leadership in education for sustainability, developing partnerships at community, state and national levels
• Assist school communities with resources, strategies and networks to develop their programs and projects
• To inspire young people to take action in their everyday lives and create solutions to the challenges facing local communities
• To evaluate the effectiveness of the program.

Its content includes a series of school education resources including:

• a teachers’ guide (see below)
• learning sequences
• non-fiction book: Living Landscapes Volume 1: a journey through Indigenous Australia
• non-fiction book: Islands of Australia
• non-fiction book: Incredible Universe Volume 1
• non-fiction book: What on Earth?
• Information about the WOODiWILD school fundraising program.

Yes! Thanks to funding support from the Phillips Foundation and several other partners, we are excited to provide the Resource Box free of charge to qualified, registered primary school teachers..

You must agree to the terms and conditions, plus for us to contact you via email so we can deliver the program. If you unsubscribe from email updates you will be removed from the program.

To help us measure the impact of this initiative, you will  be asked to complete a participant survey at the start and end of the program. This is also a requirement of the program.

Registrations will be open from May 2021 and close once all of the Resource Boxes have been allocated, so please register as soon as possible to avoid missing out on this wonderful opportunity. 

Yes: you can purchase the books contained within the 2020 Roots & Shoots Resource Box – individually and as a complete box set – via the JGIA online shop.

Due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19 around the world, delivery of the Roots & Shoots Resource Box has been delayed, to begin arrival with Australian registrants from autumn 2022.

Yes, we are offsetting both shipping and delivery, via Sendle, with our partners WOODiWILD.

Yes! Tailored sessions for teachers and all program participants will take place on dates that will  be confirmed shortly.  The sessions will be organised as live seminars via Zoom, available nationwide. 

Yes. All session recordings will be made freely available on the Roots and Shoots website and shared with all registrants via email post event.

We are offering NESA Registered Professional Development (PD) accreditation for teachers at the Proficient Teacher level. To do this you must either join a live teacher training session, or watch the full hour on YouTube within 10 days of the live event, to qualify for 1.5 hours per session.

To do this please share your NESA ID number via the following Google Sheet and confirm within 10 days of each live event that you either attended or watched online. We will then accredit your hours with NESA and share confirmation.

We have a team of volunteers ready to support you as you design, implement and evaluate your action and lessons plans.  Roots & Shoots volunteers are available for school visits, student workshops and can assist you to engage with a host of resources, training, events and grant opportunities to support your projects. No. The Roots & Shoots Resource Box is free. WOODiWILD is presented as an option for any school wanting to run a fundraiser for their own purposes. It is, therefore, not compulsory to run a fundraiser with WOODiWILD for the box to be free. If you do, however, decide to run a WOODiWILD fundraiser, you will not only get the opportunity to plant trees, but also the chance to raise funds for your school.

Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots Australia is  a global network of young people taking action to improve our world. It is a youth-led action program that is currently making a difference in over 50 countries. It builds on Dr. Jane’s legacy and vision of placing the power and responsibility for creating solutions to big challenges in the hands of the young people.

All around the world today, youth are exploring problems in their communities around animals, people and the environment.  They are brainstorming solutions and creating projects that will help to solve these problems. The Roots & Shoots program looks different for each and every member around the world. For instance, a project that works for inner city kids in Australia is going to differ enormously from a project in a  remote town in Uganda.

The Jane Goodall Institute Australia (JGIA) is a registered DGR1 charity and complies with the Australian Charities & Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) regulations on Australian charities. Established in 2007, JGIA is part of the global Jane Goodall Institute network consisting  of 25 chapters. 

JGIA is a member of the Fundraising Institute of Australia (FIA), the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and has adopted a formal Child Safe Framework to ensure the highest standards of child safety. JGIA has eight volunteer non-executive directors, seven (mostly part-time) staff and some 30 regular volunteers.
